Defending champions Liverpool hauled themselves out of trouble for the second game week running with a late winneras they edged Newcastle 3-2 at St.James Park. Teenager Rio Ngumoha was the hero for the Reds, becoming their youngest ever league goal scorer with his 100th minute winner.
The visitors took the lead through Ryan Gravenberch, with the Dutch medio’s shot taking a slight deflection off Fabian Schar and into the bottom corner on 35 minutes. Hugo Ekitike doubled Liverpool’s advantage immediately after the interval-he was the first to the rebound after Cody Gakpo’s initial effort had been blocked.
Newcastle then lost Anthony Gordon to a reckless red card, but fought back to make it 2-2. Their first goal saw Bruno Guimaraes nod home from a Tino Livramento cross, while Willliam Osula netted the second after Liverpool failed to deal with Nick Pope’s long kick.
The Magpies also lost influential players Sandro Tonali and Joelinton to injury, but were cruelly denied a well-deserved point by Ngumoha. The move was an excellent attacking one by Liverpool, with Dominik Szoboszlai’s well-timed dummy the icing on the cake as the 16-year-old fired home deep into stoppage time.
Liverpool have another tough opponent coming up in the form of Arsenal this weekend while Newcastle will square off against Leeds.
